Working with Red Heart Yarn, “Americana” self striping Red White & Blue making newborn baby hats for one of my charity projects. Lois, a member of my Stitch & Bitch collects baby hats for the newborn babies of White Plains Hospital. We often make hats with holiday theme colors. She came up with the brilliant idea to make these inclusivity hats as a “welcome to America” for the newborn babies. Red Heart Yarn can be found at any yarn store & places like Walmart for $2.88 a skein (in NY). One skein makes 3 hats.
I will glady accept yarn donations from anyone in the Westchester County in the NY area.
In downtown,White Plains, NY… Via Veneto 26 – “Finest Italian Restaurant in Westchester” – it certainly is!
It’s one of those places I pass by several times a day and mean to try… some day. I’m glad a few friends went last night. Everything is delicious! The brick oven pizza, thin crust is the best – the “Antonella” had fresh basil, tomato & prosciutto. They serve garlic & spices olive oil with the bread that was out of this world yum – I poured it on my pizza! My friends also enjoyed the pasta and a chicken caesar wrap.
The restaurant is clean, friendly, good service and offers enough reasonably priced dishes. They also offer a nice Wine list.
We enjoyed an outdoor concert, “Dancing Under the Stars the other evening – the temps were gorgeous, it was breezy and everything felt magical.
We’re having our first real heatwave (expected to last a week) here in NY. Fortunately, the humidity is not bad – I could breathe! 🙂
Me and hubby enjoyed shopping (mainly window shopping) today. We visited K-Mart, I was in search of beauty items (nail polish, eyeliner, etc.). I always enjoy HomeGoods and love seeing their ever changing items. The baskets, pillows and large glass floor vases were calling me name. I picked up some of their amazing bottles of spice and some new cloth dinner napkins.
We enjoyed an early dinner at Applebee’s and shared a full rack of ribs…mmm. There is nothing like ribs to knock me off my vegetarian mode..lol The frozen strawberry margarita was (and is always) refreshing.
We lucked out with beautiful weather today (rain expected tomorrow though). A lot of people and many families came out to enjoy. I brought a small WIP with me and “crocheted in public” while listening to the folksy/jazz band play.
The art work is exquisite – paintings, handbags, jewelry, stained glass, accessories, etc. I came home with these studs. Just a small birthday gift for me as I start the month off celebrating my special day.
Finally, White Plains gets a Dollar Tree store today!!
I had high expectations since every DT I’ve ever been too (out of NY) is a large well stocked and varied discount store. So, I was excited & anxious to see what ‘freebies’ might be offered to the first guests.
Well, the grand opening was delayed 2 hours as they waited for the “money man”…really people!? Ugh. Meantime, a dozen or so customers waited outside. Finally, the guy arrives, loads the cash registers. The employees gather outside for the obligatory group shot. Doors open!!
Inside is clean, stocked well but wait, it’s not a very large store!! 😦 Why didn’t they use the entire existing space that the previous retail store had!? YGBK (you gotta be kidding). It looks like they’re using it for inventory – how bizarre! Oh, no freebies or coupons for the guests! *Sigh* Wow, no ‘whoop di-do’ here!
So, it’s not a large store. They have the usual dedicated aisles for cards, helium balloons & gift wrap, toys, stationary items, spices/food items, a large frozen food area, bath and cleansers, etc. Some sections are smaller than others. I was expecting a larger area for decorations/holiday stuff. I hope the seasonal section of supplies expands. It makes changing it up for the holidays easy on the pocket. I found this cute RW&B scarf for the upcoming USA holidays. #score I also picked up some cleaning supplies. Compared to other local ‘discount’ stores this is the best place for cleaning supplies – some other places charge over $3 for the same cleanser. So, that’s all, for now.
I’ve made #4 out of 30 knitted washcloths. I’m adding them to my ‘TLC packs’ for my Spring donation to the women’s shelter. Going to wrap it around a bar of soap.
Happy Spring!! Happy Palm Sunday and the start of the Holy week.
I’ve done a lot of crocheted items: hats, scarves, cowls, lapghans, and fingerless gloves for our charity projects. Added together my Stitch & Bitch donated in excess of 200 stitched items. I am grateful as a group could offer so much.
On my #8 needles today is a sunny, lighter weight baby blanket (for a friend’s baby). I’m using Caron Simply soft for Spring & Easter.
I have yet to find a place that even compares to the AMAZING sandwiches made at Royal Scarlet deli!
A new small sandwich shop opened in downtown White Plains, NY: Jimmy John’s.
We love a good sandwich but finding a good place is not easy and when I indulge in a sandwich I want it to be thick and yummy.
Pluses: Jimmy John’s is conveniently located right off Mamaroneck Avenue, it is clean, the employees are friendly and greet you as soon as you walk. It was well staffed. The place is bright and has hyper vibe. The potato chips (sold separately) are awesome, crispy & crunchy, the Jalapeno ones were yum!
The menu board is placed too high, even for me at 5.7″. I had to look way up to read the menu. The sandwiches are cold (I did not see a hot option). Sandwiches have names like “Pepe”, “Big John”, “Vito”, etc.
Minuses: Seating is limited. They have a wall sized window that opens up to the street which feels too exposed. The sandwich station is obscured from customers view with an aluminum signage, not cool! I want to see them make my sandwich!! I may have noticed that the ham slices added to my sandwich still had the casing on it, ugh!! I would have also noticed that the sandwiches are more bread than content – don’t know why they call is gourmet! It’s not unlike most other chain sandwich shops…oh well!
I love the color Orange! These gorgeous blooming Tiger Lillies are everywhere this time of year! I was happy to find these huge and delicious Mangoes on sale this week (at ShopRite).
I’ve added Mango to this simple Summer salad = WINNER!!
1/2 a diced Mango
1/2 diced Avocado
Handful of chopped Walnuts
Dressing of Extra virgin olive oil & Cider vinegar, salt, black pepper & dried dill
Give it a try yourself!
White Plains, NY: PALOMBO: Pastry shop – Bakery – Gelateria – Cafe
A new store opened yesterday, 7/9/14. Located on the corner of Martine & Court St (across from 7-11).
The store space is small, clean and welcoming. There were a number of employees available to take orders and they all had smiles. I asked to meet the owners but was told they were not there. Oh well, I would have liked to meet them since it’s new.
There are a few club chairs with small tables so you can sit, sip and nibble something sweet. They also offer two trays of sugar free cookies. The coffee bar is good looking, They serve Espresso & other varieties and flavored coffee beverages. They also have boxed tea.
The counter is attractive and inviting. A counter of Gelato with a few varieties is up near the front counter. Around the side are long glass counters loaded with delicious looking baked goods.
If you’re looking for a wide variety of Italian pastries, cakes and cookies they offer a lot. Everything looks very good.
I was hoping for a full Italian bakery that would carry a line of crusty sesame covered NY Italian bread – nah, not quite. The employee pointed to a sad looking loaf…really!?
Well, I wish them well. It’s a great location.
Outdoor enclaves for lunching… one of our fav spots. The large pots are always bursting with seasonal flowers. These Petunias are gorgeous!!
Container plants are bursting with color, all over!
Makes walking downtown even more enjoyable.
June 1st…Roses always bloom in June, in New York. These are small but beautiful – and what a great color!
Haven’t seen such a good snowstorm in years, like the Nor’Easter we had today. I’m enjoying every moment of Winter!
Not sure why, but our Post Office was closed – so much for conducting business! City buses appear to be running OK . And DPW has plowed since the early morning hours.
Thankfully, our local Starbucks was open!
Fresh wreaths – I could never have too many wreaths or Christmas Greens around. The fragrance is amazing!! ShopRite has them on sale for $2.99 – love!!
Wishing you Peace and Joy this Season!
Just some of the beautiful items for sale at the Holiday boutique at ArtsWestchester in downtown White Plains, NY
Outstanding African Art, Blown glass & Fiber Art were my favorite. Hastings Tea had some cool gift baskets too. Sure love Hastings Tea!!
Two ladies along with a number of dedicated volunteers are helping folks keep their fur-babies!! There are so many ways people can help out …and it doesn’t require necessarily a lot of money. There is strength in numbers and one bag at a pet food at a time adds up! Westchester county businesses can get a “donation box” to place in their business to gather pet food donations during the holiday season.
As a pet lover I know the value of pets and the tremendous role they can play in one’s life. The Hudson Valley Pet Food Pantry, in White Plains, NY provides to those on a limited income. I use coupons along with sales to gather pet food to give to the HVPFP.
This video shows you what and how of a Pet Food Pantry. You might even be inspired to start one in your area! Watch now: http://www.whiteplainsweek.com/ptbh-11-27-13-petfood.wmv
Wednesday in White Plains we have the Farmer’s Market & my first stop is to pick up Watermelon!
One of my favorite spots in my city is the fountains at Renaissance Park
And in the evening, as the sun sets, the fountains become the backdrop for an outdoor concert, “Dancing Under the Stars”. The lights and water ‘dance’ along with the music, its beautiful!!
I hope you find ways to stay cool and hydrated this Summer!
I’m thrilled to see the ‘Before I Die’ project in my city of White Plains, NY!
I first saw this a year ago while visiting Portsmouth, New Hampshire and thought what a neat idea!! So thought-provoking and very interesting reading the responses.
